Dept of Education: Okay, here’s something less funny to tinker with: For reasons beyond the comprehension this humble blogger, Indonesian Ministry of Education took giant leaps to bridge the digital divide and published names, addresses and details of 36 million students in the country.
The database was put online a while ago but Google had already indexed it by now - if you have kids at school (private, public and religious schools all) – you can try googling them and see what comes out. You can find the FULL FILES in XLS downloadables without too much trouble. Of your children.
I had this information for a while and had already got in touch with some people who could probably do something about it. I have been assured that the Minister is personally aware of it by the time you read this and Google might want to consider removing them from the index (removing 36 million cached pages might present a serious technical challenge).
This is very serious and one wonders why the Ministry done it in the first place. I am not posting any links for obvious reasons and I would recommend that everyone else not do so either – we’re talking children from 6 – 19 years old, nationally. Do exercise some caution.
For what it’s worth, I’d say that you should do your best in trying to get the public awareness out there -probably to knock some sense out of them to remove the database as quickly as possible. I’m sure that the media will pick it up very soon, too - ideally, we would want the database to be off line by then.
From privacy to security to common decency, this should qualify as criminal negligence on behalf of the officials – but for now, let’s see what the blogosphere can do about it.
UPDATE: heard from ppl @ Google: they can and will remove it ONLY if Diknas removed the original first.

This is just so insanely stupid that it makes me wonder if the powers that be even realize what's going on. It's probably just a matter of a quick word to the right person. Who is the right person and how do we speak to her/him?

Hokey... this is scary... While other countries try to protect their privacy, this country released the most important private data of its future generation. I wonder what get into those so-called-educators.
